Located in the heart of Matosinhos, Adega Stadium - Zé Papagaio is a charming and authentic café that offers visitors a genuine taste of traditional Portuguese flavors in a cozy, welcoming setting. This beloved local spot specializes in hearty, comforting dishes that celebrate the richness of regional cuisine. Whether you’re seeking a flavorful plate after a day of exploring or simply want to unwind with a perfectly paired glass of wine, Adega Stadium stands as a genuine culinary gem.
The menu is a delightful homage to classic Portuguese fare, with standout dishes that linger on the palate. The Feijoada de Marisco is a must-try—rich, tender seafood simmered in a fragrant bean stew that bursts with depth and warmth. The Lulas Á Zé Papagaio bring tender squid cooked just right, delivering tender bites with subtle smoky and garlicky undertones. For those craving savory pork, the Bifanas and Rojões offer succulent, well-seasoned meat that melts in your mouth, often accompanied by golden, crisp bolinhos de bacalhau that perfectly balance texture and flavour.
Complementing these offerings, the café pours exquisite house wines — the robust Vinho Espadal, as well as a smooth Vinho Tinto and refreshing Vinho Rosé da Casa. Each sip harmonizes beautifully with the dishes, elevating the entire dining experience into something memorable and soulful.
The atmosphere at Adega Stadium - Zé Papagaio is distinctly unpretentious, radiating warmth and genuine hospitality that makes every visitor feel like family. Customers often praise the swift, attentive service—even on busy days—and the humble, no-frills décor that adds to the charm rather than detracts. Sitting outdoors in the tucked-away alley brings a unique vibe, though the wind might play its part, offering an honest, spirited experience that matches the authenticity of the food and drink.
Long-time patrons, such as Francisco Machado, fondly celebrate the café for its “typical, traditional” character paired with “exceptional” home-style cuisine. Carmen Cadenaba Zaragoza shares a heartfelt sentiment about feeling “as if at home,” applauding the incredible staff and promising to make Adega Stadium a perennial favorite. Nelson B. Nova sums it up simply as “a true tasca, with great food and excellent service.” And while the café buzzes with energy, especially on Sundays when reservations are not accepted, many find joy in becoming part of the vibrant local crowd, as Manuel Sousa notes — “a classic for the drink and eat crowd” with unbeatable prices and an inviting spirit.
Visiting Adega Stadium - Zé Papagaio is more than just a meal; it’s stepping into the heartbeat of Matosinhos’ culinary tradition. Its fusion of rustic flavors, welcoming ambiance, and passionate hospitality crafts an experience that stays with you long after the last bite. Whether you’re a local or a traveler in search of authentic Portuguese café culture, this hidden gem is a must-visit destination where food tells stories and every table feels like home.
Típico, tradicional e comido excepcional! O atendimento apesar de cheio foi muito rápido e de uma vontade de receber única! Adorei o espaço, que é humilde e comida caseira como não conheço nos arredores.
Rough and tough but very good - once you get to know the locals, enjoyable. Very cheap drinks - good food, feijoada de marisco on saturdays and fridays, milharas and fried squid, pork etc. Outside tables in dead end alley can be windy.. A classic for the drink and eat crowd...
Simple and honest place ran by great people I recommend going there and asking them what they have that day It can change but it should always be enjoyable We got the pork with fries, they tasted great! Cooked in a very portuguese way
